Café S'il Vous Plâit *** 1/2
Never confuse Cafe S'il Vous Plait with your standard greasy spoon diner. Yes, yes, it has booths in classic '50s style, and yes they serve rollicking good shepherd's pie, mac-and-cheese and fabulous pies, but this is comfort food with a healthy spin.

Mas' Clubhouse Restaurant ****
Now here’s a find: a restaurant that’s just as appropriate for budget-conscious families as it is for always-broke students, with very affordable (and generous) menu selections, friendly service…and good food! And surprise of surprises, not only does The Clubhouse offer many, many Japanese dishes, but the specials list often includes burgers and omelettes. Our favourite inexpensive sushi joint. We followed Chef Mas from his former digs at The Eatery and have been loyal customers ever since. Superb! And now open for weekday lunches.

Minoas Taverna Souvlaki ****
Stephanie Yuen insists: "It does not really matter how 'branded,' fine-dining restaurants with big budgets and smooth publicists promote themselves, when it comes to comfy dining that won't break my wallet, family-owned and operated restaurants are still number one on my list."

Rubina Tandoori Restaurant ****
I am forever trying to discover the mystery behind Indian cuisine. The complexity of the spices, the pungent and aromatic flavours, and the heat of curries and chilies are as enigmatic as India itself. Rubina Tandoori Restaurant is one of those places that holds the secrets to these wonderfully exotic mysteries.

We've always had a soft spot in our hearts for Sophie's -- not just because we've known Sophie herself for ages -- but because of the consistency of good, home-style cooking and that funky Kitsilano atmosphere.

This cosy family-run (and family-oriented) place is a discovery I owe to my "Good Samaritan" friend, Don Sherwin, who goes there for breakfast almost daily.

With Nando's, we know we can always find an affordable feast, custom-spiced to the degree we like, where we can get to eat in pleasant surroundings, where we really feel that we are being served and treated to a comfortable family dining experience. Basically, first-rate family dining at fast-food prices.
