Join us for:
Tea Basics
Everything you ever wanted to know about tea but were afraid to ask (well almost). A crash-course in the basic styles of tea, as well as its rich history and culture. Learn about the three main types of tea (green, oolong, and black), and taste teas from the world's main growing countries (China, Japan, India, Sri Lanka and Africa). Learn to distinguish between "self-drinkers" and blends, and leave with a solid foundation of tea knowledge.
Chinese Connoisseur
A special guest Chinese tea master will regale guests with tales of benevolent dragons, skilled monkeys, and humble monks, not to mention exotic teas from the land of Ten Thousand Teas. Guests will taste rare and traditional teas and learn the history and intricacies of Yixing tea service.
Land of the Thunderbolts
India produces some of the world's finest teas, and in this formal cupping-style tasting we explore the intricacies of the famous teas from the Darjeeling (known as the "champagne of black teas") and Assam regions. Learn about the differences in growing conditions and the mystery behind the grading systems. As well we will discuss the spicy history and taste of Chai tea and its regional differences.
"Kung-Fu" Tea 101
A fun hands-on (with your own Yixing service) tea tasting all about how to prepare and serve Yixing tea. Learn about the history of "kung fu" tea service and Yixing teapots, as well as how to season your teapot and prepare a variety of Chinese teas in the traditional manner. The price of the tasting includes a starter kit for Yixing-style tea.
Botanical Basics
Technically not teas but often thought of in the same manner, herbal "infusions" have as rich a history and broad a range of flavors as tea does. In this tasting we will take an in-depth look at the history of herbs, their cultivation and uses as well as taste a variety of "simples" and blends, and learn of their potential soothing and energizing effects.
Tea Tasting evenings at their Tearoom are very popular and reservations are required. There is a nominal fee of $15 involved (prices may vary for some of the special tea evenings). Participants will take-home tea samples, a voucher for a free cup of tea and a discount of 15% (good for that evening only).
Please call (604) 878-3000 for more information and reservations.
