Sunday, November 7, 2004 --

Zurich — Atlanta Thrashers star Dany Heatley suffered a serious eye injury after being hit by a shot during a Swiss League hockey game.

Heatley, playing for SC Bern, was hit in the eye by a shot from teammate Daniel Briere during a game Saturday night with Geneva-Servette. Heatley and Briere are both playing for Bern during the NHL lockout.

Heatley was taken immediately to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a severe swelling and inner bleeding. He had no sight from the injured eye when admitted. Doctors drained the eye to relieve pressure in it.

On Sunday, it remained unclear whether Heatley had suffered nerve damage in the eye.

S.C. Bern, on its website, reported that Heatley also suffered a fractured orbital bone below the eye, which will require surgery. The club also said Heatley will remain in hospital for at least a week and could resume playing in six weeks.

Heatley scored Bern's lone goal in its 2-1 loss to Geneva-Servette.
