Naples, Florida shopping round-up by Anne Garber
Full of chic and original shops, award-winning restaurants and outdoor cafés, the historic Third Street South shopping district is just minutes from Fifth Avenue South. Third Street South was born when Old Naples took root in the late nineteenth century. Third Street South and Old Naples are on the National Register of Historic Places and have retained many of the area's original structures. Mark, Fore & Strike, one of the first shops to open in the area, still occupies its original building today. The elegant, flower-filled shopping district also has the world's first stree concierge, helping visitors to the shops they seek, or delivering their packages to their hotel while they enjoy a sumptuous meal at one of the seven cafés and restaurants. One-of-a-kind shops range from Marissa Collections, the only boutique in Naples that carries such top fashion designers as Versace, Gucci, Jil Sander, to La Femme Perfumery, which carries limited-edition and discontinued fragrances. With more galleries than anywhere else in Southwest Florida, Third Street South is a prime destination for collectors and admirers from around the globe. The 1,000-foot Naples Pier, with its glorious views of the Gulf of Mexico, and Palm Cottage, the second oldest home in Naples, are both part of the historic district and provide an interesting and breathtaking break from a full day of shopping.
Also in the area is the eclectic waterside entertainment and shopping centre, Tin City 1200 5th Avenue, 293-262-4200). Formerly an oyster-processing plant, this lively and colourful tin-roofed complex houses more than 40 shops, and three delectable Florida restaurants. Everything from traditional and unique Florida souvenirs at The Thirsty Mouse to beautiful wood-carved art items at The Ropo Trading Co. can be found at the funky Tin City. Visitors can stroll through the shops, grab a bite and then hop aboard the Lady Brett or Double Sunshine at Tin City's docks for a half-day deep sea fishing trip, or a dolphin watch or sunset cruise. The Village on Venetian Bay (4200 Gulf Shore Blvd., 293-261-0030) takes shoppers to a faux canal-side town in Italy with its waterside shopping and colourful Mediterranean-style architecture. The charming and elegant village presents a sophisticated selection of jewellery, gourmet shops and fine restaurants. Several of the shops even specialize in European designs including Mondo Uomo, exclusive European fashions for men, Danieli European home furnishings and accessories and Marie-Michelle's restaurant featuring cuisine from the South of France.
Anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue -- the chain's number one resort store -- Waterside Shops hosts a collection of world-renowned boutiques including MaxMara and Lillie Rubin. The Rick Moore Fine Art Gallery -- featuring pieces from the famed sculptor -- is just one of many galleries and home furnishing stores in this mall collection. Coastland Center (1900 9th St N, 293-262-2323; 293-262-7100) is Naples' only enclosed climate-controlled shopping centre. Recently expanded and renovated, Coastland Center surrounds shoppers in a Key West-style atmosphere, featuring interior courtyards. The mall's 150 stores include large national chain department stores and a variety of specialty stores sure to please any pocketbook. Also at Coastland Center is the just-opened The Cheesecake Factory. Due to the increasing popularity of golf and tennis and Naples' designation as the "Golf Capital of the World," the area is teeming with a variety of sporting specialty shops. Enthusiasts will find a selection of shops including Zee's for Golf, Edwin Watt's, World of Golf and Just For Tennis. Golf and tennis buffs are sure to find what they need to suit up for the game or to improve their serve or swing.
Located just 15 minutes north of Naples -- on a day without traffic jams and highway accidents, that is -- are the Miromar Outlets, with more than 100 leading designer manufacturers and famous brand name labels at factory outlet prices. Ellen Tracy, Escada, Cole Haan, St. John, DKNY, Brooks Brothers and Nike are just a select few of the big name designers that have stores with prices up to 70 per cent off everyday retail prices. Off Fifth -- Saks Fifth Avenue's outlet store -- and five restaurants including Luna Rossa (which has a piano bar), are all recent additions to the Miromar Outlets. Strolling through the outdoor mall is an attraction in itself with beautiful courtyards and fountains and the many shaded sitting areas for those who need to take a quick break from bargain-hunting. This mall is currently offering its "Phase V" leases, so is continuing to expand, even now (10801 Corkscrew Road, Estero, 239-948-3766). Very close to Naples -- on the way to Marco Island -- is the Prime Outlets at Naples discount shopping mall (6060 Collier Blvd., 239-775-8083; 1-888-545-7196). It is run by the same folks who manage the outlet mall at Burlington, WA, Prime Outlets, so you will recognize all those "familiar faces." You will find Hanes, Harry & David, Jones New York, Bass, Mikasa, Kitchen Collection, Welcome Home, Samsonite and more. Open Mon-Sat 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.; Sun 11:00-6:00 p.m. website. Also for the bargain-shopper are the shops at Coral Isle Factory Shops, 7230 Isle of Capri Road, (239) 793-6682. Gulf Gate Shopping Plaza is a strip mall off Tamiami Trail E featuring Jo-Ann's Fabrics and Crafts, Beall's Outlet and Tuesday Morning.
Beall's Outlets: Beall's stores are self-described as "Florida's Department Store." In their incarnation as outlet stores, they appear around Naples as Beall's Outlets, often in various outlet malls:
